AGREEMENT STATE: Kansa s FACILITY:
Aircraft Instrument and Development (A.I.D.)
SUBJECT:
Radium Contamination On March 22, 1981, the Kansas City Star published a report on an aircraft instrument repair facility, Aircraft Instrument and Development in Wichita, Kansas, that was contaminated with radium. The plant reconditioned surplus military aircraft instruments.
When instruments containing radium luminous paint were received, the radium paint was stripped. The operation had not been licensed by Kansas which learned of it one year ago and ordered it stopped. Whole body counts for employt.es were ordered by the State but have not been completed. We understand that former employees have begun legal action against A.I.D.
Decontamination work was ordered by the State and is in progress.
In the last two weeks NRC staff had received inquiries from the Kansas City Star and NIOSH on the matter.
Inquiries that were technical in nature were responded to and other inquiries were referred to the State.
