Occurrence Dates - May h, 197h and May 5, 1974.

Report Date - May 15, 197h.

Facility - Big Rock Point Plant.
4.
Identification - Control rod drive withdraw timing less than 23 seconds.
5 Conditions prior to occurrence - Plant in hot standby to conduct rod drive withdraw timing tests as committed in letter of Sewell to O' Leary on May 1, 1974.
6.
Description of Occurrence - During timing test on the rod drive system 6 control rod drives were found to withdraw at less than 23 seconds with. primary system at approximately 380 F.
These were readjusted and timed at greater than 25 seconds. The drives were again tested at approximately 550 F and one of the same drives again withdrew in less than 23 seconds. This drive was again adjusted and retimed at greater than 25 seconds. Plant heatup was then continued.
7 Analysis of Occurrence - Our analysis and hazards considerations remain as outlined in the aforementioned letter of May 1, 1974.

Designation of Cau'se - Probable design deficiency in drive hydrau-lic system but exact cause remains unknown.
9 Corrective Action - The drives were adjusted and retimed in the hot condition. Future testing is being considered to isolate the cause. Permanent corrective actions vill be as outlined in the Sewell/O' Leary letter of May 1, 1974.
