Dear Mr Ahearne:
This letter is our sincere request that you as Chairman of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission use your influence with the Commission to see that the Metropolitan Edison Company is granted the right to restart without further delav their nuclear electric generating facility known as Three Mile Island Nuclear Plant-One.
It has now been nearly two years since the unfortunate incident at Three Mile Island Nuclear Plant-Two.
From all that we can read and hear, it is our understanding that the seriousness of this incident was the result of hu=an error, which to us means that Planc-One could and should have been restarted as soon as this fact was established.
As an organization of retired employees of Consumers Power Company in the Lansing, Michigan Area, we are all well aware that the use of nuclear energy for electric generation is aconomical and safe; as evidence, our Company has in successful operation two nuclear plants and a third under construction.
It is also our understanding that with this unit shut down it is costing Metropolitan Edison Company for outside purchase of electrical ersrgy some
$500,000.00 each day that it is not operating. This unnecessary 70 wasteful cost must be passed on to its customers in the form of substantially higher electric rates.
Our group understands that the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission is now beginning hearings to decide whether or not. TMI-l should be restarted; we again urge you to do all within your power to have this plant put back in full operation at the earliest possible date.
At our last Capitaliers' Board meeting the following Directors of our Executive Board authorized my signature as President of our organization: Victor-Whiting, Marguerite Fav, Glen Sipe, Roy Finst. rom, Martha Kennedy, Stuart Graham, Donald Voss, and Harry Williars.
