This is in response to your latter to Secretary Schweiker requesting :
aid to expedite cleazaap of the Susquehanna River following tha Three Mila Island accident.
We share your concern about the potential 1isk to che Susquehanna River.
However, it is our understanding that the prasese delay in cleanup operations is not dua primarily to lack of funding but, rather, to the need by the "uclear Regulatory Commission, the Departnant of Energy, and the. nvirc:x:: ental i
Protection Agency to develop the safest methodology possible for such removal so that surrounding bodies of water will not be contaminated by the removal process.
You any wish to write to the Office of Nucisar Rosetor Regulation, U.S.
Nuclear Regulatory Coerission, Washington, D.C. 20555, directly regarding the progress they are making in developing appropriate methodology. We are taking the liberty of forwarding your latter to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
Thank you for your interest and concern in this important problem.
Sincarely yours, b
illiam H. yoege, M.D.
