RESEARCH INTO MEANS OF IDENTIFYING POTENTIAL PRECURSORS TO SEVERE CORE DAMAGE ACCIDENTS FROM LICENSEE EVENT REPORTS (LERs)
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is sponsoring research into means of identifying potential precursort. to severe core damage accidents from Licensee Event Reports (LERs). This work was initiated pursuant to recommendations by the Lewis Committee and is not yet at a stage that warrants a published NUREG report. However, we recognize that many parties are working intensely on.ER reviews so we have asked our con-tractor, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, to prepare a rough draft covering the status of the work which has already sifted the LER file for a number of events that may have varying precursor importance. This draft f
is attached for your review. We welcome any comments or advice on how we can improve this work. We are also interested if any adaptation of this work, short of its final form, could' facilitate current efforts in LER screening which are consuming so many valuable resources.
