Dear Mr. Dromerick:

On February 12, 1981, the SNUPPS Utilities and their contractors met with the NRC Staff to discuss the Auxiliary Feedwater System. A list of attendees is attached. The following is our understanding of the commitments made at that meeting:

1. SNUPPS will take the actions and submit the information specified in a March 10, 1980 NRC letter to pending OL applicants. Many of the items in that letter were dis-cussed during the meeting (e.g. reliability 5tudy, stan-dard review plan requirements and generic short and long term recommendations).
2. SNUPPS will submit information to show that the auxiliary feedwater pump and system design will perfonn satisfactorily during a low pump suction switchover of feed sources. A specific situation that will be considered is an auxiliary i feedwater start signal received when the condensate storage tank isolation valve is shut.
3. SNUPPS will evaluate the thermal effects of partially drained, hot main feedwater piping being filled with cold auxiliary feedwater.
4. The NRC recommends a water-hammer test be perfonned at all plants.

The NRC agreed to provide infonnation on the requirements for such-a test. SNUPPS will evaluate these requirements against the tests that are planned. 300'/

S. The NRC will provide recomendations issued by the Instrumen-tation and Control Systems Branch concerning automatic initia-tion of auxiliary feedwater and auxiliary feedwater flow indication. SNUPPS will address compliance to these recom-mendations. (Subsequent to the meeting it was learned that the NRC requirements are fully addressed in NUREG-0737, Item II.E.1.2)

6. SNUPPS will evaluate the effects of a failure of the gas storage tanks used for the auxiliary feedwater and atmospheric relief valve control.
7. The NRC recomends redundant level indication and redundant low level alarms on the condensate storage tank. The alarm should allow for 20 minutes before operator action. The NRC agreed to determine the acceptability of using comon taps for the redundant instruments on this non-safety grade tank.

SNUPPS will consider this recomendation.

8. The NRC recommends a 48-hour, in situ endurance test on all auxiliary feedwater pumps. The NRC agreed to provide infor-mation on the test and test data requirements. SNUPPS will evaluate this recomendation against the tests conducted and planned for the SNUPPS pumps.

If you have any coments concerning these meeting results, please contact the undersigned.

Very truly yours, Gita: R. L. Strig RLS/srz Attachment-cc: 0. Parr NRC J. Bryan UE-G. Koester KGE D. McPhee .KCPL
