Attention: Mr. J. P. O'Reilly, Director [,s /0

Dear Mr. O'Reilly:

yky\(8/ 'y, j ig SUBJEC*: Grand Gulf Nuclear Station Units 1 and 2 Docket Nos. 50-416/417 File 0260/15525/15526 PRD-81/01, Status Report, Trans-america DeLaval Turbocharger Lubrication AECM-81/50 On January 2, 1981, Mississippi Power & Light Ccmpany notified Mr. P. K. VanDoorn, of your office, of a Potentially Reportable De-ficiency (PRD) at the Grand Gulf Nuclear Station (GGNS) construc-tion site. The deficiency concerns lubrication of the thrust bear-ings on Turbochargers manufactured by the Elliott Co=pany for De-Laval DSRV engines. Transamerica DeLaval notified the NRC of a 10CFR Part 21 condition concerning the above on December 16, 1980.

Transamerica DeLaval has designed a system modification cor-recting the above problem. However, we will require more time to review the adequacy of their modification and formulate proper corrective actions, as well as determine reportability under 10CFR 50.55(e) and 10CFR21. '4e expect to forward to you our final report on this matter by June 2, 1981. Our status report is attached.

Yours truly, M

p J. P. McGaughy, Jr.

STATUS REPORT FOR PRD-81/01 I. Description of Deficienev Transamerica DeLaval notified the NRC on December 16, 1980, of a 10CFR Part 21 condition, which identified a potential problem with lubrication of the thrust bearings of the turbochargers which ceuld result in engine non-availability. The engines identified with GGNS are SN70433/36 DSRV.

These turbochargers are manufactured by Elliott Company of Jeannette, PA. They are installed on the engines by Transimer-ica DeLaval and lubricated in accordance with Elliott Company's recommendations.

The potential defect exists in the lubricating oil system that supplies oil to the turbocharger bearings. The design of this system permits lubricating oil to flow to the bearings only when the engine is running and prevents oil flow to the bear-ings when the engine is in the standby mode. The oil seal of the turbocharger is a labyrinth type seal and is only effective when the turbocharger is running. Because of the possibility of seal leakage when the turbocharger is at rest (engine Standby mode) the turbocharger L. O. system is bypassed at this time.

Engine availability could be affected if the defect noted by DeLaval is not corrected. If the engines are not available, then the standby generators would not be able to supply power

' in the event of the loss of offsite power. As such, the ability to safely shut.down the plant and =aintain it in a safe, shut--

down condition would be impaired following a loss of offsite power.

4 II. ' Proposed Resolution.

MP&L has implemented the following program through the Architect /

Engineer / Constructor:

1. Evaluate Transamerica DeLaval's proposed modification for application at GGNS.
2. Investigate corrective actions required in light of (1.)

above.to correct the deficiency and to preclude recurrence.

3. -Investigate further the possible impacts on safety and de-

-termine reportability under 10CFR50.55(e) and 10CFR21.

III. Status of Proposed Resolution / Reason for Delav in Final Report Initial investigations are still under way by Architect / Engineer.

IV. Projected Final' Report Submittal Date We project submission of our-Final Report by June 2, 1981.
