Operating License No. DPR-73 Docket No. 50-320 Liner Storage Modules Monitoring Wells We earlier advised you were studying whether monitoring wells should be installed in the vicinity of the Solid Waste Staging Facility.
The purpose of the wells would have been to detect leakage of water containing very low levels of contamination detected in the Facility This was addressed in Attacheent 3 to the report transmitted sump.

We have concluded that such wells are not necessary and that the current monitoring being conducted (also identified in the above-referenced report) is sufficient to provide an early warning system for mitigativs actions should such become necessary.
Furthermore, tritium concentrations measured in the sump have been only two orders of magnitude above background. Considering the statistical uncertainties of tritium measurement and the effect of dilution of groundwater, it is doubtful that leakage from such a low level source could be detected by groundwater sampling.
For the above reasons, we do not intend to install monitoring wells in the area of the liner storage modules.
