'IW February 4, 19811 James F. Ahearne Chairman U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission 1717 H S treet, NW Washington, D.C.
Dear Sir; This correspondence is in reference to Docket 50-289SP concerning Three Mile Island Unit #1 of Middletown, Pa.
It is a fact that Three Mile Island Unit 1. now clased
(
by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, was not involved or dam-aged in the accident at TMI Unit 2 in March of 1979. Moreover, a poll taken last spring in cities near TMI indicated that in excess of 58% of the residents favored restarting the undamaged reactor.
Unfaortunately, the U.S. government has decided to the.undama$ed, up4t, during modif-stop the operation ogg);$ plants els4GQre are operating while ication. Yet similar nuc2,e in the process of modification !
4 Since the inc3 dent, the U.S. electric power industry l
has responded quickly and forcefully to correct inadequacies in-dicated by the accident. The corrections have been and are now
(
being made at the undamaged uni.t. As a resulti this unit, like plants elsewhere, is safer thr_n it was before-it closed for I
routine inspection and refueling way back in 4979 Moreover it's costing Metropolitan.; Edison and its customers nearly $500.000. a day! That is, $500.000. daily to purchase more expensive coal and oil instead7f uranium for use as fuel.
I feel that the government's' decision to keep-the un-damaged unit closed, then, is not only discriminatory and irrat-ional but totally unjustified gs well.
Please lets get Three Mile Island Unit #1 back. d? t I E l
operation again !
