50-416/417 File 0260/15525/15526 PRD-80/75, Status Report #1, Defects in Structural Steel AECM-81/53 On December 30, 1980, Mississippi Power & Light Company notified Mr. J.
Rausch of your office of a Potentially Reportable Deficiency (PRD) at the Grand Gulf Nuclear Station (GGNS) construction site. The deficiency concerns imperfactions in nuclear designated structural steel supplied by Mills Alloys located in Cleveland, Ohio.
Our investigation of this condition is still in progress. Attached is our Status Report. We expect to complete our investigation and submit a final report by July 30, 1981.

Description of the Deficiency Longitudinal indications in the form of cracks / tears have been found on structural steel wide flange beams (WF 12x136). The web of the beams shows imperfections from one half (h) inch to twelve (12) inches long and one thirty-second (1/32) inch to one-eighth (1/8) inch deep.
These indications are identified on WF 12x136 steel, heat numbers 73E230 (USS), 70A010 (USS), 72A103 (USS) purchased from Mills Alloy and manufactured by U. S. Steel.
II.
Approach to Resolution of the Problem and Status of Proposed

Resolution Total footage of the discrepant WF 12x136 steel beams has been re-trieved and segregated and will be returned to supplier. Archi-tect/ Engineer is working with the supplier to investigate cause and develop proper remedial actions based on results of investi-gation.
III. Reasons for Final Report Delay 4
Investigations by Architect / Engineer are still in progress.
IV.
Projected Date for Final Report We project completion of corrective actions and submission of final report by July 30, 1981.
