Dear Sir:

Three Mile Island Nuclear Station, Unit 1 (TMI-1)

Operating License No. DPR-50 Docket No. 50-289 Reactor Building Spray System Our previous letters of April 2, 1980 (TLL 154) and October 2, 1980 (TLL 496) supplied our plans to modify the Reactor Building Spray System (RBSS). As a result of further studies we have determined that less extensive modifications than previously indicated are needed. We have concluded that the needed improve-ments can be accomplished by eliminating the use of the sodium thiosulfate tank and modifying the concentration of the sodium hydroxide tank.

Prior to implementation of this change, studies to overcome single failures in the system while maintaining a proper pH, must be completed.

Upon, completion of these studies, system modifications will be proposed and a technical specification change will be submitted for your approval. The tentative date for submittal of this change is April 30, 1981.

Sincerely,

i. D.
