SUBJECT:
POSSIBLE SERIOUS RADIATION EXPOSURE The State of Oklahoma had been notified that an individual was i thty ~'~ J~
Oklahoma hospital with what is purported to be serious radiation iny the chest and left forearm. Raw bleeding of the area was occurring and the left nipple was gone. The individual had worked recently for Houston Inspection (September 7 - October 7, 1980) doing radiography in the State of New Mexico (AgreementState). He had worked as a radiographer for Tulsa, Oklahoma Gama Ray (NRC Licensee), until December 1979 and other radiography companies prior to working'in New Mexico. The State of Oklahoma surveyed the individuals home on 1/22/81 and found no source but they stated that a relative thought that he had some kind of device at his home recently.
Dr. Carl Bogardus, Oklahoma Medical Center, is taking charge of determining if the injury is from radiation and management of the case.
Dr. Maxfield, Jr., NRC Medical Consultant, Dallas, Texas has been requested by the Regional Office to contact Dr. Bogardus concerning the injuries.
There has been no media involvement to date. No press release is planned at this time.
The Office of State Programs has been notified.
The regional office will initiate an immediate investigation provided medical opinion confirm that the injuries occured from radiation.
Region IV (Arlington) received notification of the possible exposure by telephone from the Oklahcma State Health Department on January 22, 1981.
