Subject:

Interim Report of 10CFR50.55(e) Item on Micro-Switch CMC Type Switches. (#34)

Dear Mr. Keppler:

On December 3,1980, Detroit Edison's Mr. II.A. Walker, Supervisor -

Construction Quality Assurance, telephoned Mr. R. Knop o f the NRC -

Region III to report on a problem with defective Micro-Switches at the Fermi 2 Site.

A number of defective Micro-Switches, CMC type, were noted on GE supplied panels in the Fermi 2 control room. Approximately two to three ht.ndred of these switches are used in the GE supplied control room equipment.

Start-Up has tested a hundred and thirty of these switches and noted six failures. The reason for the failures were crushed internal parts in the switches, improperly assembled switches and other damaged parts. It was apparent that these switches were installed in this condition. Defective switches have been replaced and testing of these switches will continue.

A final report is scheduled to be submitted to you by March 10, 1981.

If you have questions concerning this matter, please contact Mr. H. A.

Walker, Supervisor - Construction Quality Assurance.

Very truly yours,

- /
