I am writing to you with respect to the relicensing of the research reactor of the Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute (AFRRI) located in Bethesda, Maryland.

It is my understanding that the reactor is scheduled for relicensing in the near future. I would like to request that every consideration be given toward requiring the preparation of an ' environmental impact statement prior to that relicensing. As you are aware, the reactor is located in a densely pcpulated, mostly residential area, and it is imperative that the safety and security of the neighboring residents be assured, and well as the safety of those who work near the react,or..,.n , ,..r... , , , , ,, ,

On behalf of a group of my constituents with whom I recently met, I would also like to request that a public hearing be held prior to relicensing. Such a hearing would, I hope, include the presentation of data relevant to this l reactor, an explanation of its functions,.and a thorough review of the safety and security aspects which are so vitally important. This hearing would al'so provide a forum for citizens concerned about reactor safehy to express those concerns and to directly question the officials involved with the. project. . . _..
