Dear Dr. Morris:

Att: Mr. D. J. Skovholt 10 /' ?'-

m p

This letter will confim our recent discussion with the USAEC Compliance Office, Chicago, regarding an overspeed trip of the emergency diesel generator at Bi6 Rock Point during test operation.

On February 20, 1969 the emergency diesel generator was test operated and started satisfactorily; however, the unit immediately tripped on overspeed. The overspeed mechanism was readjusted to the 110% of normal operatin6 speed, and the unit was successfully test started an additional two times. The diesel generator was then loaded for its nomal test run and operated successfully.

After the test mn, the diesel generator was unloaded and a fine adjustment made to the overspeed mechanism using a sensitive frequency meter recorder to insure a proper trip setting. Again, the diesel was test started and did not trip. The diesel generator was then placed in the normal standby service.

Subsequent discussions with the manufacturer revealed that a 110% settin6 would be very marginal and that the overspeed mechanism should be adjusted to trip at approximately 115% overspeed and could be safely increased to 122%. At this writing the overspeed mechanism set point has been increased to 115%, and no further overspeed trips have been experienced.

Yours very truly,

[$ &}
