Mr. D. J. Skovholt On April 7, 1969, Consumers Power Company sent you copies of Special Report SR-10 covering the performance evaluation of centermelt fuel irradiated during the period March through June 1968. On April 16, 1969, represen+.atives from Consumers Po'er Company and General Electric Company discussed the report with USAEC DRL and RDT representatives in Bethesda. At that time, we stated that it was our intention to reinsert the center =elt fuel into the Big Rock Point reactor during the April-May 1969 refueling outage, if the single centermelt fuel bundle irradiated during the period June 1968 through April 1969 performed as expected.
This bundle has not performed as expected. Consequently, we will not reinsert any centermelt fuel into the reactor at this time.
We are currently evaluating the performance of the single centermelt bund *.a.
This evaluation will undoubtedly change our con-clusions on the original centermelt faile.es and 1.ay even change the progsed cente rmelt irrad$ tion program. The res"1.ts of th$ s evalua-tion, when completed, will be reported to you 1'1 a semiannual report.
