General Off ces: 212 West Michigan Avenue. Jackson, Michigan 49201. Area Code S17 788-0550 December 6, 1972 Mr. Boyce H. Grier, Regional Director Re: Docket No 50-155 Directorate of Regulatory Operations and US Atomic Energy Commission Docket No 50-255 799 Roosevelt Road Glen Ellyn, Illinois 60137

Dear Mr. Grier:

During a recent telephone conversation, Mr. Vetters of your staff requested clarification with respect to the valve wall thickness verification programs for the Palisades Plant described in our November 9, 1972 letter. This letter will provide the requested clarification.

Our November 9 letter stated that the inspection program at Palisades would include one (1) valve of each type, size and rating for each valve manufacturer. This includes forged valves as well as cast valves, as was required by your September 13, 1972 letter.

At the Palisades Plant, there are fifty-seven (57) valves that are located within the reactor pressure boundary as defined in your June 29, 1972 letter. The program, as defined in our November 9,1972 letter, requires t' at seventeen (17) of these valves be inspected. The largest group of valves (when categorized by size, type, rating and manu-facturer) is eight (8).

Yours very truly, d
