March 22, 1974 Mr. L. Manning Muntzing Director of Regulation US Atomic Energy Commission Washington, DC 20545
Dear Mr. Muntcing:
Your letter of March 12, 1974 provided guidance on public announcements of events concerning nuclear power plants. Over a year ago, Consumers Power Company star.ed a program of issuing press re-leases for any nuclear plant shutdown, any event invol.d_ng an abnomal release of radioactive materials or apparent nonradiological environ-mental damage. This progrc= vas expanded in the fall of 1973 to provide to aporoximately 50 members of the news media copies of all correspondence originated by Consumers Power Co=parc/ to the AEC. This pmgram includes all nonroutine and routine reports required by the operating license as well as other items of correspondence concerning the general conduct of our business.
Our review interr'Mj leads us to believe that cur erit ting program provides for the announcecents contemplated by your letter. I have asked our electric staff to review this matter with Mr. Keppler and to take such steps as are necessar/ or appropriate to insure co=plete and continued compliance.
Yours verf tr4,
hL AHA/vm CC: JGKeppler
