FIRE PROTECTION MODIFICATION UPDATES By lette-s dated June 10, 1977, Consumers Power Company submitted tentative schedules for the co=pletion of plant modifications deemed necessary by the Palisades and Big Rock Point Fire Hazards Analysis.
In the forwarding letters for these schedules, a commitment was made to provide an updated project status.
The purpose of this letter is to provide that status.
Attached are the revised Big Rock Point and Palisades Plants fire protection modification status schedules. These schedules reflect the estimated time frames necessary to complete each plant modification committed to in the appli-cable Fire Safety Analysis. As in the past, the schedules are tentative.
They are based on several variables highly susceptible to change including outage times, staff site visits, staff Fire Hazards Analysis review, and procurement lead times. Further, because of the inordinate costs of the project, the sched-ule has been adjusted to allow for NRC staff review of the major modifications after preli=inary design has been completed and prior to becinning final design.
This vill ensure staff approval and acceptance of the modifications and vill al-low for a more efficient allocation of costs in final design and construction.
It should be noted that modifications 6 and 7 for Palisades and modification 9 for Big Rock Point do not have any predicted completion dates. To meet the in-tent of these modifications, Consumers Power Company is considering developing a separate shutdown path, independent of the cable spreading rooms, for both plants. Thus, until preliminary design is completed, the magnitude of the modi-fications is known, and the plant modifications have been reviewed and accepted by the staff, no realistic completion schedule can be promulgated.
