December 1,1980 CRJ/80/200/ETS Mr. Charles E. MacDonald, Chief Transportation Certification Branch Division of Fuel Cycle and Material Safety V. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D. C.
20555 Re: Docket No. 71-6698 NFS-4 (NAC-1) Spent Fuel Shipping Cask
Dear Mr. MacDonald:
The Nuclear Assurance Corporation (NAC) hereby requests that Certificate of Compliance No. 6698, Revision No.12, dated October 17, 1980 be revised to recogni::e the fact that the inside diameters of the end castings and the inner cavity pipe were manufactured to be slightly different (as reported in Excelco Development, Inc. 's inspection reports dated-in April,1974). While these differences have no safety implications, they do influence the ability of the cask measurements to meet the acceptance criteria of Paragraph 14(c) of Certif-icate of Compliance No. 6698.
Ne suggest the following change be made to Paragraph 14(b) of Certificate No. 6u96:
"(b)
Cask measurements will be accomplished using six (6) calibrated gauges mounted on a six (6) anned fixture movable over the length of the cavity. The gauges are mounted and oriented such that " radial" measure-0 0

ments may be made at 30, 90, 150, 210, 2700, and 3300 from a 00 point, which is the center of the l
center valve port. The measurements may then be converted to diameters at azimuthal locations of 300-2100, 900-270, and 1500-3300 Axial locations 0
for cavity measurements to be recorded will be nominal 4-1/2 inches and 12-1/2 inches from the top of the cavity and at nominal 6-inch intervals there-after over the length of the cavity except that the axial interval between the two measurements at the bottom of the cavity shall be approximately 3 inches apart. This will result in " radial" measurements at l
29 axial locations for a total of 174 values."
