SUBJECT:

MAINE YANKEE PLANT VISIT T

A plant visit was made, during October 7, 1980, to the Maine Yankee Atomic Power Station by R. A. Clark and G. Requa. A list of attendees is attached.

W. J. Lazarus Senior Resident Inspector OIE for Maine Yankee participated in the plant tour and discussions with the licensee.

The specific plant areas visited were the spent fuel pool, the main feedwater system (MFWS) and the auxiliary feedwater system (AFWS). The MFWS regulator valves and by-pass valves were observed since Maine Yankee will be modifying these valves to include safety grade circuits and components for automatic closure. Two AFWS motor driven pumps were observed in the AFWS pump room as well as the steam generator emergency feedwater panel. A FEMC0 intercom system was located near the control panel.. The third AFWS pump driven by a steam turbine, was observed in the steam and feedwater valve room.

It was noted that the communication system nearest this pump was located in an adjacent room. The pump however is observable from the communication panel. This-pump has to be manually started from this room (not from the steam generator emergency panel). The steam turbine drive is self regulating.

It was noted that no loads other than those specific to the spent fuel pool room had to be carried by crane in the spent fuel pool room. Procedures as well_as crane interlocks are in place to preclude moving heavy loads other than fuel over the spent fuel racks.

The' status of outstanding action items (generic and site specific) was reviewed with corporate and plant management. Most of the outstanding items were found to be generic items currently under review by the NRC.

NRC agreed to review the status of the generic items and Maine Yankee agreed toexpeditethoseitemsidentifiedassugmittalsduetutheNRC.
