Atlanta, GeorJia 30303 THETulletin 80-11 "Mascnry Wall r' sign" ATTENTION: Mr. James P. O'Reilly Gentlemen:
Georgia Power Company hereby submits the enclosed information in esponw to Item 2(b) as required by I&E Bulletin 80-11
" Masonry Wall Design", transmitted in your letter dated May 8,1980.
Also enclosed for your informatica and supolement to the response is an outline of our architect-engineer's computer program " Block Walls" used for the re-evaluation of reinforced concrete masonry walls.
During the course of the evaluation, it was discovered that nine (9) concrete masonry walls were shown to have stresses above the design allowables during the application of earthquake loads.
All of the subject walls are located in the control building.
Results of the re-evaluation and location of the walls are noted in Appendix H and Appendix A, respectively.
Design modifications are in progress to provide the necessary corrective actions to the walls to lower calculated stresses to within the design allowables, or to relocate safety-related equipment attached to or in proximity to the walls.
Continued plant operation during the period of time required to fix the walls is justified for the following reason: The probability of occurrence of an earthquake in the time frame required to fix the walls is considered low, and although stresses which would result from an earthquake might cause local cracking of a wall, it is unlikely that wall failure would occur.
In addition, if a wall failure were to occur, it is unlikely that redundant systems or equipment _ would be impaired.
Please be advised that there are three (3) walls in the main stack that-have been inaccessible during the wall re-evaluation period.
The three walls are scheduled to be examined during the current Hatch Unit 2 maintenance / refueling outage. NRC will be notified of the results of the evaluation of the subject main stack walls when available, i
