The Honorable Frederick M. Bernthal Assistant Secretary of State for Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs C
U.S. Department of State Washington, D.C. 20520 t
Dear.Dr nthal:
Thank:you-for your letter of November 20, 1989, inviting the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to participste in the meeting of the U.S.-Indonesian Nuclear Joint Steering Committee-to take place in Jakarta on December 11-12, 1989.
I appreciate the importance the Department attaches to the
-development of Indonesian nuclear safety capsbilities and recognize that the.NRC has provided such assistance as needed i
i over the last few years.
Unfortunately, because of limited resources and other obligations, we will be unable to send a l-representative to the Jakarta meeting.
Although we must decline your invitation, I want to assure you that the NRC continues to' support the effort-to-improve nuclear safety worldwide.
The Commission appreciates your offer to brief us on U.S.
. foreign policy = initiatives and priorities in the foreseeable future, and would be pleased to receive the Department's views, which will help us give policy direction to the staff in= planning our international safety cooperation program.
We have made arrangements for such a briefing at 10:00 a.m. on December 22, 1989, and look forward to hearing from the Department of State at that time.
Sincerely, h
Kenneth M. Carr O@
