This report is made in cunpliance with 10 CFR 32.12 for the period April 1991 through February 1995 relative to Bethlehem Steel Corporation's Byproduct Material License No. 37-01861-05 authorizing the use of cobalt 60 sources in blast furnace refractory lining and its distribution in i
exempt concentrations in steel.
All iron was owned by Bethlehem Steel Corporation at the time of the introduction of the cobalt i
- 60. The variability in the time interval between when the iron is produced in a blast furnace and when that iron is transferred to a customer as finished steel is sufficiently great enough that we are making the conservative assumption that no loss of activity occurs due to radioactive decay.
initial activities are thus assumed to be identical to the activities at the time of transfer.
The attached table lists those blast fumaces having refractory wear indicating sources, the amount of cobalt 60 introduced into the iron and the initial concentration in the iron (the concentration in the finished steel would be less due to dilution of the blast fumace iron with scrap steel).
