Subject:

Detroit Edison Response to NRC IE Bulle

Dear Mr. Keppler:

The final report of our analysis and evaluations of the potential valve castings materials problem described in the subject bulletin cannot be submitted to your office at this time. Pursuant to the reporting requirements specified in the subject bulletin we submit the following interim response:

a. The results of our initial determination of those Festmi II valves that may contain parts cast by Malcolm Foundry Company, Inc.

are not yet cocplete. Responses from all manufacturers queried have not been received as of this date. Follow-up actions are continuing to complete this phase of the investigation. These i

include participation in the NOMIS committee investigation.

b. The names of the affected manufacturers supplying safety-related valves to the Fermi II Project are provided on the t.ttached listing.
c. Our planned action is to formulate a verification, testing and upgrading program once the extent of the potentially faulty l

l components situation is determined.

d. The schedule for accomplishing this action is indeterminate until

' such time as the required scopr of the investigation of acceptable mechanical propertiss is established.

This situation necessitates that we request an indefinite extension of the reporting date. Detroit Edison Project Engineering will continue to keep the review moving and will notify yo'ur office of any definite developments.
