205 N. E. Eleventh St.
Abilene, Kansas 67410 February 13, 1981 Hon. James F. Ahearne, Chairman U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission 1717 H Street N W Washington, DC 20555
Dear Sir:
This letter refers to Docket 50-289SP, TMI-Unit 1, Middletown, PA.
It appears that the government's decision to keep the undamaged unit closed at TMI is not justified and actually is discriminatory since similar plants elsewhere are operating while being modified.
The public is so uptight about danger with respect to nuclear power because the media has emphasized danger rather than the safety aspect.
I'm sure that thousands more have been endangered by hazards associated with the coal and oil producing industries than by nuclear power but the public is not reminded o# thar.
European countries have far out-distanced tne United States of America in the development and use of nuclear power.
If they can do it successfully, why can't we?
This does not mean that we should not develop all other forms of energy that are practicable.
It seems to me that rather than prove the danger of nuclear power TMI proved that it was much safer than many people considered it to be.
TMI-l needs to be restarted without further delay.
