Subject:

WPPSS NUCLEAR PROJECT NO. 2 VALVES

Reference:

Letter to JJ Stein from RH Engelken, same subject, dated January 3, 1974.

Dect Mr. Engelken:

The referenced letter transmitted " Regulatory Operations Bulletin No. 74-1" which documented certain valve problems associated with Darling valves, and valves supplied.by the Walworth Company. In light of this information, you requested a determination as to whether similar valves are installed or scheduled to be installed in Washington Public Power Supply System's Nuclear Project No. 2.

A review of purchases made directly by Burns and Roe, Inc. for the Washington Public Power Supply System indicates that similar valves are not now installed or scheduled for installation in WNP No. 2. In addition, we have instructed Burns and Roe, Inc. to evaluate these deficiencies to be certain similar valves do not become installed in WNP No. 2.

We have forwarded this information to General Electric Company to detennine if similar valves are in their scope of supply. General ' Electric's prelimi-nary review indicates that valves described in Regulatory Operations Bulletin No. 74-1 are not in their nuclecr steam supply system for WNP No. 2. However, a more detailed investigation is required to be certain none of the two-inch valves associated with General Electric's scope of supply are similar to those described. The results of this determination will be reported to you by March 4,1974.

Very truly yours,
