Our August 19, 1980, letter regarding I&E Bulletin 80-17 concluded that the existing float switches were adequate to assure that no water collects in the scram dischrege volumes (SDV) because of the unique geometry of the SDV piping. We further stated that the operability of each scram switch was being assured by a functional test of each switch following each scram.
In our Auoust 19, 1980, letter we stated, for your information, our plans for a temporary installation of a system using ultrasonic transducers (UT). The purpose of this installation was to have been to provide Georgia Power Company with additional infonnation on the behavior of the scram switches. However, the environment in which the equipment would have beea placed makes the UT devices prone to failure and highly unreliable. We have, therefore, decided not to install the temporary UT devices.
We are, however, continuing to investigate the cause of the float failures. Until we are assured that corrective action has been taken to preclude similar failures, Geogia Power Company continues to assure operability of the switches following each scram, as mentioned above, by a functional test of each float switch.
