Subject:
Request for NRC review and Endorsement of NEI 00-01, Guidance for Post Fire Safe Shutdown Circuit Analysis, Revision 4, and NEI 04-02, Guidance for Implementing a Risk-Informed, Performance-Based Fire Protection Program Under 10 CFR 50.48(c), Revision 3 Project Number: 689
Dear Ms. Whitman:
The NRC currently endorses portions of NEI 00-01, Guidance for Post Fire Safe Shutdown Circuit Analysis, Revision 2 in Regulatory Guide 1.189, Fire Protection for Nuclear Power Plants, Revision 3. The NRC also currently endorses NEI 04-02, Guidance for Implementing a Risk-Informed, Performance-Based Fire Protection Program Under 10 CFR 50.48(c), Revision 2 in Regulatory Guide 1.205, Risk-Informed, Performance-Based Fire Protection for Existing Light-Water Nuclear Power Plants, Revision 1. Since the issuance and endorsement of NEI 00-01 and NEI 04-02, several advancements have been made in key areas related to fire protection, and the Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI) 1 and its members have revised both of these documents to incorporate the latest operating experience and lessons learned.
1The Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI) is responsible for establishing unified policy on behalf of its members relating to matters affecting the nuclear energy industry, including the regulatory aspects of generic operational and technical issues. NEIs members include entities licensed to operate commercial nuclear power plants in the United States, nuclear plant designers, major architect and engineering firms, fuel cycle facilities, nuclear materials licensees, and other organizations involved in the nuclear energy industry.
Ms. Jennifer Whitman December 17, 2019 Page 2 Final versions of both of these documents are attached to this letter. We request NRC review and endorsement of each of these documents in revisions to their respective Regulatory Guides.
