SUBJECT:

LEAKAGE PRDBLEM WITH CHECK SOURCES SUPPLIED BY SORRENTO ELECTRONICS / GENERAL ATOMICS j

In a memorandum dated June 13,1989, R. R. Be11any, Region I, informed me of a potential generic problem associated with some check sources supplied by l

Sorrento Electronics (SE)lem was discovered when a leaking SE check source a subsidiary of General Atomics, San Diego, Califor-i nia. This potential prob i

resulted in personnel contamination at Seabrook. The discovery of these laaking sources was below the threshold for 10 CFR Part 21 reporting.

l We contacted Sorrento Electronics and suggested that they inform their custom-l ers of the problem. Sorrento Electronics responded with the enclosed " Quality Assurance Bulletin," dated June 1989, which was provided to SE customers with Radiation Monitoring System Equipment.

We plan no further action on this matter.

SUBJECT:

.' Chlorine-36 Checksource Leachis3 The Seabrook station recently experienced Chlorine-36 leaching from a checksource used in the RD-7, RD-108, RD-11 and RD-12HT detectors.

In addition, the foil window covering the sourse cavity fell off. These two conditions exhibited theorelves on detectors subjected to high humidity.

The following checksource history is proviced for your infornation:

1.

The checksourco in the RD-7, RD10B, RD.11 RD-12 or RD-12HT detector is cl-36 salt with an activity level of 1.25 uC1 or le s.

It is manufactured by General Atomics or Isotope l'roducts Laboratories.

2.

The Cl-36 salt is located in a cavity in the source 61 der. It is held i

in place with Mylar, Kapton or thin aluminue tape that acts as a window for the Beta particles.

l 3.

For the RD-7, prior to 12/85, the window was.00C25 inches of aluminum, Mylar, or Kapton tape wrapped over the cavita and epoxied in place.

(See dwg 0281-0736 Rev. D) Between 12/85 and 5/(7. the window was 8 ag/sq cm Kapton tape wrapped o'..n the cavity. After S/87, the source is installed in a cavity in a plug +. hat is inserted into 3he end of the eere* eM c?.C epoxied in place. (See dwg 0281-0736 Rev. FJ 4.

For the RD-108, RD-11, RD-12. and RP-lhq ? HMyr thEliEmissest prist u EE7 h aWin Eks listalled th a bavity in th~e source bolder and an alubinus or Kspton window was ceaeuted over the cavity.

Optional construction provided a ring for rataining the window. (See dwg 0281-0068 Rev. E) Since 6/87, the source is placed in a counterbore in the source i

holder and held in place with a plug.

The plus has a.002 itch thick t

window. The plug is epoxied in place in the counterbore. (See dwg 0281-0068 Rev. G) 4 It is reconsended that each plant check their chlorine-bearing detectors to ensure that the checksource is adequately cemented in place. Seabrook is using Conathane epoxy, manufactured by Conap, to cement the checksource.

Please contact Victor Camacho at (619) 457-8863 or our Eastern office at (919)481-4425 for more information.
