Dear Sir:

Q

//

e,s Three Mile Island Nuclear Station, Unit 1 (TMI-1)

Operating License No. DPR-50 Docket No. 50-289 IE Bulletin 81-03 This letter is in response to your letter of April 10, 1981, forwarding IE Bulletin 81-03 concerning flow blockage of cooling water to safety system components by Asiatic Clams and Mussels.

The TMI Environmental Controls Section has researched the existence of the subject fauna, in the Susquehanna River. The Asiatic Clams have been docu=ented as far inland as the Conowingo Dam (located 56 miles below rMI). The mussel is of no concern in that it lives in salt water. Therefore, no i= mediate prevsative action is required for the TMI station.

Contact with the downstream utilities will be maintained t.o monitor any migration of the Asiatic Clams.

Studies to be performed in accordance with the Technical Specifications for the TMI station would reveal the presence of the Asiatic Clam in the near vicinity.

Additionally, pertinent information from utilities with experience in dealing with this problem is being gathered to maintain a file on control measures and management practices.

A proposal for a Susquehanna River Study of the Asiatic Clam has been submitted to the Maryland Power Plant Citing Group. Progress of this proposal and possible study will be monitored. The formlation and review of this response required 7 manhours.

Sincerely,

. D.
