Dear Mr. Youngblood:
Subject:
SUPPLY SYSTEMS NUCLEAR PROJECTS NOS.1 & 4 DIESEL ENGINE COMBUSTION AIR INTAKE AND SRP 9.5.8 In our February 13, 1981 letter we requested receiving NRC agreement on the use of a common combustion air intake structure for the redundant diesel generators.
We have recently received some questions from Mr. A.R. Ungaro of the staff regarding this request.
The questions and our response are as follows:
1.
Does the common intake structure serve the redundant diesels for both WNP-1 and WNP-4?
Ans.
No.
One structure will only serve the diesels for one unit. WNP-1 and WNP-4 are of similar design but share no safety related structures, systems or components. They are separated by approximately 2500 feet as shown on the attached drawings.
2.
Is ventilation air for other systems also drawn from this plenum?

Mr. Youngblood April 3,1981 Docket Nos. 50-460 & 50-513 G01-81-89 Ans.
Yes.
The supply air for the safety related systems and other systems in the GSB is drawn from this plenum. How-ever, as shown in the drawings included with our February 13 letter, separate ducts are used for the diesel combustion air intake and the supply air for the other systems.
3.
Has this arrangement been discussed with the diesel manufacturer and is their any concern expressed on their part?
Ans.
Yes, the design has been discussed with the manufacturer, Delaval and no, they have no concern. They consider the feature out of their scope and their only concern is that the diesels receive adequate air supply.
