Subject:

Reactor Coolant Pump Trip Alternative Study

Dear Sir:

Maine Yankee committed via ref (b) to submit a reactor coolant pump trip alternative study responsive to Action Plan Item IIK3.5 by August 15, 1981.

This commitment was made after considering the workload associated with verification of small break LOCA codes by calculation of integral test results from the LOFT series.

Since that commitment was made, additional work relating to integral tests has been requested via ref. (c), and through discussions with your staff.

Work relating to these requests is to be completed prior to further detailed consideration of the RCP trip question.

The RCP trip alternative submittal has therefore been rescheduled to October 15, 1981.

We have discussed this matter with Dr. Brian Sheron of your staff.

Sincerely yours, MAINE YANKEE ATOMIC POWER COMPANY 0-W John H. Garrity, Dikector, toclear Engineering and Licensing JHG/bjp 810.41302 O
