South Texas Proj ect Units 1 & 2 Docket Nos. STN 50-498, STN 50-499 ASME Safety-Related Welding 10 Week Work Plan Pursuant to references (a), (b), and (c), the restart of ASME safety-related welding commenced on a limited basis on November 24, 1980. Welding was initiated on component cooling water system piping in the Unit 1 Mechanical-Electrical Auxiliary Building and on small-bore pipe fabrication in the field fabrication shop. The reexamination and repair of previously completed welds in ASME Class 1, 2, and 3 piping, including ECW system piping, was also initiated.

Relative to further ASME safety-related welding, a welding work plan has been developed for the 10 week period beginning on December 22, 1980. This work plan, submitted as Attachment 1 to this letter, identifies additional ASME production welding to be performed as well as the estimated time frames for performing the work. The plan includes welding of piping, hangers and supports in carbon steel and stainless steel materials.

-Page 2 This work plan is considered the second phase in our efforts to eventually achieve full ASME production welding on a normal basis. The plan also identifies reexamination and repair activities which will be performed concurrently with the production welding.
