MEMORANDUM FOR:
Chairman Hendrie Commissioner Gilinsky Commissioner Kennedy Comissioner Bradford FROM:
Edson G. Case, Acting Director Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation fr THRU:
Executi"7 Director for Operations
SUBJECT:
MEETING WITH STAFF MEMBERS OF SENATE SUBCOMMITTEE AND COMMITTEE ON ENVIRONMENT AND PUBLIC WORKS On December 22, Kevin Cornell telephoned me to request that I meet with staff members of the Senate Subcomittee on Environment and Public Works on December 27 to discuss my
. written testimony at the " North Anna Fault" hearing on October 13, 1977 before the Subcomittee. He stated that t
Senator Hart was considering writing a letter to the Comission on the subject, and that he (the Senator) thought the Subcomittee. staff should discuss the testimony with me prior to the sending of such a letter.
Jim Long of NRR (who assisted me in drafting my testimony)
Ed Fay (CA) and I met with Haven Whiteside, Kevin Cornell and Carol Hackes of the Subcomittee staff and John Yago of the full Comittee staff for about-two hours, as requested.
The' primary topic of discussion was that portion of my testime:iy dealing with whether and when VEPC0 had informed the AEC staff in 1973 that the geologic feature in question during May-August 1973 was a " fault" as opposed to a
" chlorite seam." The Subcommittee staff stated that they had become aware that VEPC0 disagreed with the statements in my testimony on this point through.ff nding a copy of r. letter from Mike Maupin (VEPC0's attorney in NRC proceedings) to_ Tom Engelhardt. (NRC/ ELD) in the NRC Public' Document Room. They inquired as to why NRC had not provided tha letter to the Subcommittee staff, my comments on the statements in'the letter, and the bases for the statements in my testimony concerning whether and when VEPC0 had informed the AEC staff that the geologic feature was a fault.
