Materials: Up to one milligram of plutonium in solution and up to one gram of uranium-235 in solution will be the maximum material quantities in the area at one time, and only one of these will be in process, i.e., the other would be stored in the hood, unopened. A nominal 12 grams of plutonium-238 are being
-used as sealed heat sources on the third floor of the building; except for the unlikely possibility that gram quantities of other material would pass through the building while in transit, these are the only materials in Bldg. 221.
Facilities: Figure 1 shows the NBS site with Bldg. 221 marked.
Figures 2a and 2b show basement, first, second, and third-level original floor plans.
Minor room size and access modification have been made. Figure 3 shows the mass spectrometer facilities. Room B33 is divided into a cold lab and the hot lab where the material will be processed. The hot lab hoods are equipped with roughing and absolute filters, manometer monitored, in the laboratory itself.
Room A30 contains the mass spectrometer to be used for analysis.
Operations:
In one of the hoods in the hot lab, an aliquot of solution with a nominal two nanograms of plutonium or a nominal two micrograms of uranium-235
' is removed from the container.
This is deposited on a filament that is trans-ferred to the mass spectrometer for analysis. Following analysis, all the material is kept in the hood until it can be transferred to an authorized recipient.
Protection: Hood airflow is maintained at a nominal 100 linear feet per minute.
Lights on the hood indicate power losses and the local manometer indicates the drop of pressure across the filter. Health Physics measures the airflow on a bimonthly schedule. Gloves and lab coats are worn during filament loading.
Smears are taken by Health Physics on a veckly basis routinely and at the operator's request.
If contamination above the 20 dpm a per 100 cm* is found, a sheet shnilar to Figure 3 would be returned to the
-operator.
In that case, all operations would cease until the contamination is cleaned and steps' taken to prevent further releases.
Instrumentation: Gas or air proportional or scintillation a-survey meters are in the f acility during operations. Smears are counted in 2n, windowless, gas-flow proportional counters. A constant air monitor with a thin end-window GM probe and filter is in the attic of Bldg. 221, with an air intake from outside air for the hoods exhausting at roof level of the building.
Wastes: Solid wastes are placed in radioactive waste cans in the hot lab; liquids are kept in closed containers in the hoods. Health Physics, on the operator's' request, will transfer these to the Radioactive Waste Annex for storage until transfer to an authorized disposal contractor.
Solidification of liquids could be done La the hood, under Health Phyeics supervision, or at the Annex.by Health Physics.
