Dear Sir:

Subject:

Compliance with Revised Section 10CFR50.48 and New Appendix R to 10CFR50 Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Corporation nas reviewed the extensive criteria contained in the revised Section 10CFR50.48 and the new Appendix R to 10CFR50, dealing with fire protection. The following information is submitted in accordance with.the schedule promulgrated in Section 50.48(c), (1) through (5).

Section III A, Water Supplies for Fire Suppression Systems In Reference (b) above, the NRC staff expressed a concern that a break in one of the underground discharge lines from the fire pumps could affect the other discharge line, resulting in e total loss of the fire water supply and has called for a relocation of one of the underground lines. Vermont Yankee

. contends that this relocation is not necessary and has re-submitted results of calculations supporting our contentions (Reference (d)).

We~ maintain Gese calculations demonstrate that we comply with section IIIA in that "a failure

'of one supply.will not result in the failu're of the other supply".

We will await ' the NRC staff's completion of their review of Reference (d).
