STATEMENT BY THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF THE BERKS COUNTY CHAMBEIl OF COMMERCE l

The Berks County Chamber of Commerce continues to be deeply concerned about the need for a dependable source of electrical energy and a supply sufficient to meet the requirements of business, industry, and residents now and in the years ahe.2d.
l Metropolitan Edison Company supplies Berks County with 90% of its industrial and 80% of its residential electrical needs. Before the accident at Three Mile Island, a satisfactory source seemed assured. Sloce that time, it is evident that it could be in jeopardy.
The lack of an assured supply at reasonable cost could damage the economy of Berks County and cause a severe loss of jobs. It would also seriously affect plans of businesses to expand their operations and would discourage nen companies from locating in our area.
To replace the energy supplied by the two nuclear units a; Three Mile hsland, Metropolitan Edison Company must now purchase its energy from outside sources at prices substantially above the cost of production of TMI.
To alleviate this serious situation, TMI 1 should be placed in service as soon as plant safety standards' have been met.
On behalf of over 800 Chamber members who employ a substantial portion of the work force in the area, the Board of Directors of the Berks County Chamber of Commerce calls upon all regulatory bodies, and specifically the Nuclear Regulatory Com' mission to:
- 1) Specify whether reasonable safety standards have been established for TMI1.
- 2) Specify what further conditions must be met and actions are required for Metropolitaa Edison to obtain authorization to re-start TMI 1.
- 3) Authorize re-start of TMI 1 as soon as these conditions have been met and actions have been completed.
