0 Wilmington, IL 60481 1,

'b 7f Dear Mrs. Corbin g.

As a result of your concern voiced at the public meeting for the Dresden n Unit No. I decontamination, Mr. M. Phillips of my staff collected environ-l mental well water samples on August 27, 1980. These samples were collected at the following locations:

a) City of Braidwood, well no. 1 b) City of Braidwood, well no. 2 c) City of Braidwood, well no. 3 d) Corbin residence, shallow drinking water well.

e) Corbin residence, deep wash water well, prior to the water softaner.

f) Corbin residence, sand point irrigation well.

The sampics were submitted to the Radiological and Environmental Sciences Laboratory (RESL), Idaho Falls', ID, which is operated for and by the United States Department of Energy. Sample results are presented in Table I, along with the results of sampics collected by the State of Illinois from the three Braidwood City wells.

As was discussed in the telephone conversation between you and Messrs.

W. Axcison and M. Phillips of my staff on February 18, 1981, the State of Illinois issued a letter stating the three Braidwood City well results may be in error. The levels of radioactivity found in all of the samples are within the levels found in northern Illinois due to the presence of radium-226 and daughters. The large variation in gross beta results are most probably due to the naturally occurring potassium-40 leaching into the shallow well ground-water from fertilizer use on your farm. No manmade radionuclides that could possibly be associated with the operation of a nuclear power plant were detected in any sample.

As was discussed in the above referenced telephone call, we will again collect samples from the Braidwood City wells and your home after the Braidwood Nuclear Power Station has been in operation to compare with these results.
