Grier, Director Gentlemen: This letter is in reference to IE Bulletin 80-19, " Failures of Mercury-Wetted Matrix Relays in Reactor Protective Systems of Operating Nuclear Power Plants Designed by Combustion Engineering". In accordance with licensee action paragraph two, surveillance testing of C. P. Clare Itdel HG2X-1011 mercury-wetted relays installed in both Calvert Cliffs units' Reactor Protective Systems has been increased to the prescribed frequency. It is anticipated that a qualified dry-contact relay will be available in a direct replacement configuration by early 1981. When available, replacement relays will be purchased. It is our intention to replace the mercury-wetted relays on an "as failed" basis, following the recommendatior -" "mbustion Engineering, Incorporated. Until a new replacement er. .s available, the presently installed relays will be replaced in k1 tid.
