Subject:
LaSalle County Station Units 1 and 2 Response to Informal Questions Related to Fire Protection NRC Docket Nos. 50-373/374
Dear Mr. Schwencer:
The purpose of this transmittal is to document informaticn provided to Messrt. A. Bournia and G. Harrison of the NRC Staff in a telephone conversation on May 20, 1981.
This information was presented in response to questions relative to the design of the fire wall which has been added in the Auxiliary Electric Equipment Room at LaSalle County Station.
This wall, which is discussed in the LaSalle County Safety Evaluation Report (NUREG-0519, Section 9.5.6.2), shall be a three hour firt barrier as opposed to the two hour barrier referred to in the SER.
This barrier is basically a masonry wall with personnel and equipment access docrs through it.
The Staff's questions were directed at the equipment access door (a roll-up fire barrier).
The Staff was informed that the centerline of this door was greater than or equal to fourteen inches from the nearest equipment.
The minimum distance from the door surface to the nearest equipment is, therefore, expected to be greater than twelve inches.
The masonry wall tl' rough which the equipment access door passes is ten or more inches from the closest equipment.
These dimensions have been field verified, except for j
the distance from eouipment door to equipment because that door has not yet been delivered.
However, the door jam is installed and the i
centerline location verified.
Furthermore, in response to direction from the Staff, Commonwealth Edison agreed to provide a liquid seal at the base of the equipment (roll-up) door, to eliminate a potential seepage path l
for flammabla liquids.
This seal w'll be a minimum of one inch in height.
On the basis of this information, it is the understanding of the applicant that no sprinklers will be required in the Auxiliary Electric Equipment Room.
The SER will be modified by the l
Staff to reflect this new information l
