NAME OF PREPARER W. R. CARTWRIGHT PHONE (703) 894-5151 8105190 2 70

Virginia Electric and Power Company North Anna Power Ststion, Unit #1 Attachment: Page 1 of 1 Docket No. 50-338 Report No. LER 81-027/03L-0

Description of Event

On April 21, 1981, the emergency diesel generator 1J developed an oil leak. The oil leak was in the area of the exhaust manifold which created a small fire. The diesel generator was declared inoperable in order to repair the oil leak and repair any fire damage.

Probable Consequences of Occurrence The redundant diesel generator and off-site power sources were verified operable in accordance with the action required by T.S. 3.8.1.1.

Therefore, there was no effect on the health or safety of the public.

Cause of Event

The manufacturer was contacted to determine the cause of the oil leak and recommended corrective acticas. The occumulation of lubrication oil in the exhaus'. ports, due to an J.nsufficient run time to vaporize the oil, caused excessive build-up in the turbocharger region. When the engine was restarted, this accumulation ignited causing a small fire.

Immediate Corrective Action

The fire was extinguished and the engine declared inoperable. A gasket that initially allowed the excessive oil to run onto the exterior l

of the exhaust manifold was replaced. The generator was operated fully l

loaded for 4 hours4.62963e-5 days
0.00111 hours
6.613757e-6 weeks
1.522e-6 months
to vaporize any remaining oil in accordance with l

instructions from the manufacturer's representative.

Scheduled Corrective Action l

l No further corrective action is necessary.

Actions Taken to Prevent Recurrence 1

l In order to prevent recurrence, the diesel generator will be operated for 2 hours2.314815e-5 days
5.555556e-4 hours
3.306878e-6 weeks
7.61e-7 months
with at least 75% load whenever the diesel generator is started.

However, if the diesel is started for an operability check every 8 hours9.259259e-5 days
0.00222 hours
1.322751e-5 weeks
3.044e-6 months
3 l

l the 2 hour2.314815e-5 days
5.555556e-4 hours
3.306878e-6 weeks
7.61e-7 months
loaded operation will occur every other 8 hour9.259259e-5 days
0.00222 hours
1.322751e-5 weeks
3.044e-6 months
check. This l

procedure should prevent an excessive accumulation of prelubrication oil.

l Generic Implications This event is generic to all North Anna Unit I and 2 emergency diesel generators. Therefore, the 2 hcur loading requirement will apply to each generator.
