ULTRASONIC DIAGING LABORATORY Monthly Report for March 1981 Report Submitted to Dr. Jos eph Muscara Nucle tr Reguintory Commission by Prof. S. Ganapathy REAL TDE PROCESSING An improved version of the SAFT processing program was implemented on the VAX.

The program will process data, depth by depth, using an expanding aperture.

An improvement in speed over the Interdata was seen, but further improvements will require assembly coding of the inner loop.

GRAPHICAL DISPLAY OF FLAWS The first version of the " Walk-thru" method of disp _aying cross-sectional images is now complete.

Some experiments were performed in an attempt to increase the piayback rate --

results are not yet reasonable.

A 16mm film demonstrating "walkind-thru" at different rates was produced to determine satis factory playback rates.

The film simulated playback rates of 4, 8 and 12 frames per second.

Four frames per second seems about the right speed.

Some technical problems were encountered due to a mismatch between the blue response of the film used and the blue output of the RAMTEK monitor.

These can be rectified in the future by choosing a more appropriate film.

Page 2 Monthly Report for March 1981 FLAW DETECTION The study of Kalman filtering techniques continued, and some thought was given to incorporating a Kalman filter into a larger flaw classification scheme.

AUTOMATIC BOUNDARY EXTRACTION The Sobel and Roberts edge detectors were transferred to the VAX and tested on sample data with satisfactory results.

The three available edge detectors (Sobel, Roberts and Frei and Chen) are currently being tested on real ultrasonic images (subject to data availability on the VAX).

I[{ AGING WEAK REFLECTORS NEAR THE FRONT SURFACE A new Butterworth filter for the signal subtraction program was designed and the modifications to the two-dimensional FFT program were completed.

SYSTEM UPGRADE Purchase Orders for new terminals, are out and the computer room renovation designs are now complete.

A new data acquisition system is nearly designed -- purchase orders for the components should be out early in April.
