Dear Mr. Bucher:
Your letter postmarked March 12, 1981, to President Reagan has been referred to the Nuclear Regulatory Comission for reply.
There are no nuclear power plants in operation in the State of Indiana.
The Nuclear Regulatory Comission has issued permits for construction of the Bailly plant near Lake Michigan about 12 miles from Gary and the Marble Hill plant near the Ohio River about 11 miles from Madison.
Before these perv.its were issued, a thorough investigation was made of the safety and environmental aspects and it was determined that the plants could be built and operated without undue risk to the health and safety of the public. These matters will be considered again before operating licenses are issued.
There are over seventy nuclear power plants in operation in the United States, and in no case is there any evidence of physical injury to the general public. I would like to assure you that every effort is being made to ensure the safety of all nuclear plants currently in operation and those that may begin operating in the futcN.
