. (b) PSAR Amendment #43 to Pilgrim Station Unit #2 License Application dated April 29,1981 -

Dear Ms. Adensam:

The purpose of this letter is to provide clarification of Boston Edison's response to 10CFR50.34(e)(3)(v), reference (a), which was provided in reference (b). This clarification was requested by D. Scalletti by telephone, 5/5/81.

On page 1C-79 of reference (b) Boston Edison made the following commitment:

"The systems necessary to ensure containment integrity will be designed to perform their function during and after being ex-posed to the environmental conditions executed by activation of the distributed ignition system."

The following clarification of this commitment is hereby provided:

The design of the systems necessary to ensure containment integrity will specifically include use of containment tempera-ture prr'iles, that result from the postulated hydrogen events, as input to the analyses or tests which will demonstrate equip-ment survivability and/or qualification.

Very truly yours, /
