Dear Mr. John Ahearne N
,..,.,. e l '
I am sittine here at my dinine room table surrounded by s' tack.s),;.6
~
of articles, books, and letters all dealine with nuclear power and all i
its phases.
I am contemplatine how I should organize my thouahts and feelines of anaer, disbelief, diseust, and finally hooe and optimism.
The crisises of a nuclear society are affectine every aspect of every-one's life in a most detrimental manner.
You have a job to do.
You have esined the power, the knowledee, and the self-esteem, and the courame to influence the decisions our world must take-to end this nuclear nichtmare, this sleepine dragon who has awakened more than I care to think about and has struck with forces we cannot control.
You must know dealine with this nuclear draeon every day tha t we are out of control.
There is a chain reac-tion of nuclear proliferation occurine on this most delicate earri We must SCRAM now, shut down nuclear power now, before the meltdos af our society.
It is sometimes difficult to see this issue from the average in-dividual's point of view especially when you are dealing with techni-cal data day in and day out.
But you must know you have the respon-sibility to end this dangerous nuclear proliferation.
How long are we moing to continue to pretend, suppress and down play this extreme haz-ards of our atomic age?
Who is going to take the courage and strength to stop this incredible insane societal suicide?
Are you and your co-commissioners goins to find the necessary means to and the nuclear epi-domic, this race to armezzeddonfi 1 am tired of livinz with this threat from the beginnine of the nuclear fuel cycle-uranium mining to the final bomb.
.Our, people's i
safety, their mental and physical health are all in jeoprody with this I
nuclear threat hannine over our lives and our communities.
As a Mon-l tessori teacher, a mother, a wife, an individual who cares for the l
Lives and safety of every human, I ask you with erect hope, and encour-I seement to find the courate to use your knowledze, power and influence, to remind yourself of your treat responsibility in your position to -
channe the direction of this nuclear society.
We do not need nuclear power.
It provides only 3 per cent of our total enerey needs.
Why do you or any of us as a society need the hazards and problems nuclear power has brought us.
Give people the incentive and a chance to conserve enerny, to build more efficient appliances, to build fuel efficient cars.
We can do these things now an shut those nuclear'drazons down.
We do not need this source of enerzy.
We have other alternatives now.
Please I urge you to do your job as it was designed to function. You have the opportunity now to help this situati6n.

o 1 urge you to vote NO to the reopening of Unit 1 of Three Mile Island nuclear power plant.
With Metropolitan Edison Co. requesting the NRC to restart this Unit I we are adain threatened with more nuclear proliftention.
To restart Unit I nuclear plant is unacceptable espec-ially without the completion of fair and open public hearines.
It is also unacceptable with Unit 2 still in such an unstable and *iazardous state.
It is we, the people not just the nuclear industry, not jur.c the government who must be included in the decisions of nuclear power.
So' leo t former we are a democratic society.
Let the people have their riehrs to life, liberty, and the pursuit of hapoiness.
Do not deny us our constitutioral riehts to free speech by closine hearings, by speedine up Licensine proceedines', by denying the public and inter-venors the rieht to discovery,* freedom of information and truthjand finally the richt to determine our futures.
You can make a difference.
Sincerely for a Safe Energy Future gg q
