H Docket No. 50-320 The Honorable Spark Matsunaga United States Senate Washington, D. C.

20510

Dear Senatcr Matsunaga:

I am pleased to respond to your March 18, 1981 letter to Carlton Kammerer concerning your constituent's interest in the contaminated rodent droppings at Three Mile Island.

The NRC staff at the Three Mile Island site has concluded that neither the contaminated rodents nor their droppings pose a radiological risk to the public or the environment.

Nevertheless, this situation continues to be evaluated by the licensee, Metropolitan-Edison. To date, no rodents have been observed and the traps and poisoned baits located in the area by Met-Ed appear to be undisturbed.

In addition, contaminated areas where the droppings were discovered have been decontaminated and followup surveys are being performed by the NRC.

To our knowledge, no formal report has been issued on this matter other than press releases by Met-Ed.

However, per your request, I have enclosed a copy of a preliminary notification prepared by the NRC's Office of Inspection and Enforcement concerning evidence of the contaminated rodents.

Should any future reports become available, I will be happy to forward them to you.

Sincerely, (signed) T A. B'h" William J. Dircks Executive Director l

'off. A pest exteminator was called to the site to capture the contaminated rodents.

! The licensee's management stated in their news release that "This is another situation that argues for moving ahead on the cleanup of Unit 2 as promptly as possible.

So lonc as contamination is allowed to remain in Unit 2 we have the ingredients for possible j risk to the public." After examination of this event the NRC onsite staff concluded

,that the contaminated rodents did not pose a radiological risk to the public jortotheenvironment.

Media interest is expected because the licensee issued a press release.
