Dear Mr. Keppler:
Reference:
Enrico Fermi Power Plant, Unit 2 USNRC Licensing Docket:
50-341 USNRC IE Bulletin 80-21 (11-6-80)
Detroit Edison Letter EF2-49,889 (1-19-81)
Subject:
Detroit Edison Response to NRC IE Bulletin 80-21 The final report of our analysis and evaluations of the potential valve castings materials problem described in the subject bulletin cannot be sub-mitted to your office at this time.
Pursuant to the reporting requirements specified in the subject bulletin, we submit this second interim response:
The current status of our investigation of Fermi 2's safety-related valves that may contain parts cast by the Malcolm Foundry Company, Inc., is as follows. The names of the manufacturers supplying safety-related valves to the Fermi 2 Project are provided on the enclosed listing.
All of these manufacturers have completed their investigation (except General Electric) and have confirmed that the valves they supplied to the Fermi 2 Project do not contain Malcolm castings.
Per General Electric's response (TDEC-3957) (on file),
their investigation of safety-related valves purchased uader P.O.
The valve vendors that are still being investigated by General Electric are indicated on the enclosed listing. When General Electric has completed their review, the results of this review shall be summarized and forwarded to your office.
This situation necessitates that we renew our request for an indefinite extension of the reporting date.
Detroit Edison Project Engineering will continue to keep the review moving and will notify your office of any further developments.
Should you require additional information from Detroit Edison in this matter, please advise us.
Very truly yours, b/
