Subject:

Zion Units 1 and 2 Containment Hydrogen Monitoring NRC Docket Nos. 50-295 and 50-304 Reference (a):

December 15, 1980 letter from J. S. Abel to D. G. Eisenhut

Dear Mr. Denton:

This is to inform you of our intention to request a change to the list of containment isolation valves in Zion's Technical Specifications.

As indicated in reference (a) we plan to complete installation of new contair. ment hydrogen monitors by January 1, 1982 to comply with the requirements of NUREG-0737.

Before those monitors go into operation a change will be required to the list of containment isolation valves contained in Table 4.9-3.

Installation of the new hydrogen monitoring system includes replacement of the half inch manual isolation valves on the containment air sampling inlet lines.

Solenoid operated vavles are being installed so that they can be controlled remotely.

The Zion 1 valves are being installed this spring.

This Zion 2 valves will be installed later.

The new valves have new numbers ana there will be a temporary conflicts between the valve numbers listed on Table 4.9-3 and the actual number on the containment isolation valves in those lines.

Manual control of the new valves will, however, be retainea to keep the plant consistent with the original design description until NRC issues a change to the Technical Specifications.

This will ensure that there is no unrevieweo safety question.

We plan to submit the proposed change within the next four weeks.

Please address any questions regarding this matter to me.

Very truly yours, Yk
