Mr. Robert W. Reid, Chief Operating Reactors, Branch 4 U.S. fluclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D.C.
20555 Docket No. 50-312 Rancho Seco Nuclear Generating Station, Unit 1 Emergency Planning Offsite Real Time Radiation Monitors
Dear Mr. Reid:
The proposed Revision 2 of the flRC Regulatory Guide 1.97 recommends 16-20 locations for the environs radioactivity monitors (noble gas, halogens, particulates). The value "16" implies one monitor in each sector with the remainder located at other ereas of interest.
A cur ent California Senate Bill (CA SB 1184) is also requiring SMUD to place radiation dose rate monitors in the environs at locations in concurrence with the State Department of Health Services (Radiological Health Section) and County representatives. At present, meetings with the State and County have resulted in 32 proposed locations, eight of which are within the site boundary.
We are requesting clarification on NRC's concept regarding distribution of the Regulatory Guide 1.97 monitors so that this can be factored into the final placement of the devices.
Sincerely, 0r ]%WA w
